Traditionally - for centuries in Liburnija masks take over on the feast of St. Anton, January the 17th and the Carnival folly begins. Dancing and singing, "kampanat&obahajat" until Ash Wednesday. The sound of Antonja's horn, hand over the town's key and hoisting of carnival flag mark the start of Carnival 2009. Opatija is ready!

At the time of carnival, Kvarner takes centre stage of Croatian crarnival, masked fancy-dress parties providing a memorable experience fused with Mediterranean and Continental influences. Almost every place holds carnival festivities, and some towns have several carnival festivities at the same time. Opatija holds carnival events in tents, halls in the streets at Liburnia Riviera Hotels. During the same day in Opatija riviera, you can participate in children's carnival festivities, in the evening, join some of the masked balls.

Children of Opatija and young counselors from 4th Croatian Children's City Counsels Congress will celebrate their Day on the main street of Opatija under motto "Children in the role of adults". The traffic will be stopped for several hours on Friday December 12th.
