For the last thirty three years, this exciting race of self-made vehicles that run on ball-bearings (known locally as "balinjere" – hence the name) instead of wheels, down Opatija's main street, to the delight of thousands of spectators, has always been the original attraction of the carnival in Opatija. The Balinjerada is partly a race in which the "pilots" of these unusual homemade vehicles must show their driving skills, and partly a carnival parade, in which carnival groups make ironic comments on current events in society with their imaginative constructions, in which they have invested months of effort.

This musical event presents traditional Croatian vocal groups in a different way, as they sing famous carnival songs in the rhythm of the polka. In addition to the vocal performances, another significant aspect to this competition is the carnival spirit, as the audience and the jury will judge not only the musical quality, but also the quality of the masks and choreography. Famous musicians, carnival groups and bell-ringers (traditional masks of the region) will take part in the programme.

Croatian Museum of Tourism has prepared a story about Paul Kupelwieser, the Austrian entrepreneur, who in the late 19th century, transformed the island of Brijuni. His great-nephew, Hans Kupelwieser, is one of the leading Austrian artists of today who specializes in painting, sculpture, installation and architecture, and experiments exchange media.

Auto Club "RI Autosport" organizes on Saturday, January 23, 2016, one day touring event called "seventh Rally of masked octanes Halubje - Liburnija 2016." which starts in Viškovo and ends in Opatija. Participants masked vehicles and drivers with an escort. Rally each year bring together around 40 masked vehicles in all, three and four wheels from the Croatian, Slovenian and Italian.
